To get a jump on his graduate school money needs, Ben wants to win the prestigious Robinson Scholarship, a large award big enough to pay for all of Harvard Med, or about $300,000. Big money. Unfortunately, he may not have a chance against his competition for the scholarship: last year, the scholarship went to an immigrant with one leg. Worried, he starts looking for other ways to make money.
Professor Rosa and a cute MIT student and blackjack spotter Jill Taylor, played by Kate Bosworth, pull Ben onto the team for his stellar math skills. He starts spending every spare moment learning the ways of the blackjack table.
What Happens in Vegas
Prof Rosa and Jill, along with the rest of the team, drill Ben on the finer points of card counting to beat the house in Blackjack. They show him how the team works to win at the tables. When to split your hand, when to leave, when the deck is hot and so on. They also play around with a few disguises and personalities, to keep the casino guessing and to keep winning. I enjoyed watching the team work, with signals, code, shuffles and all. In real life, this would take many weeks, and then the casinos carefully watch for it at their own pits on camera.
If a casino catches them card counting, the penalty could be severe. You can probably find easier ways to get money for college than staring at the fist of a security manager named Cole, played by Laurence Fishburn. Cole doesn't tolerate counting at his tables, while at the same time losing customers to new security measures at casinos across town. Ben finds out the hard way that casinos like to keep their money.
The plot moves around, Boston to Las Vegas, in school to the Blackjack pits. You'll find a few twists, and you'll see the team live it up in Vegas. Ben and Jill have a few moments together, for a little love story.
Ben also alienates a couple of his brainy friends during the movie, and ruins some of their plans for another project. He has to deal with the ethics - the lies - about having lots of money around, flying to Las Vegas for the weekend constantly, and keeping secrets about his other group of friends.
As he gambles on the team and blackjack to pay for med school, he finds his life in a spiral. His life starts to fall apart, and the fun gives way to pressure. He has to stop it before he loses control completely, and can't reclaim his future or the present.
The movie has a fun, Hollywood finish. The specifics I'll leave for you to see in the movie itself. 21 entertained, and I enjoyed it. It has a few typical Las Vegas show scenes inappropriate for younger viewers.
Remember, this is a movie. You'll find a few good twists and some nonlinear story telling. I don't recommend earning money for college like this, but the scholarship essay adds to the ending. Go see it.

The glamour and glitz of Tinseltown hit the French Riviera this week as the 61st Cannes Film Festival began.
The next 12 days will be full of A-listers, wannabes and executives schmoozing, posing and partying at the film industry's most famous and prestigious event. There will also be a good deal of serious film viewing and reviewing.
This year's festival is showcasing South American film and promises something for everyone, from dark independent European tales and quirky animation to good old-fashioned blockbusting Hollywood adventure.
Over 33,000 industry professionals will be in Cannes to see 22 movies fight it out for the coveted Palme d'Or for best film which is awarded on the final day, 25 May. Other awards in the motion picture competition include the Grand Prix, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Actor.
The main competition opens with Brazilian entry Blindness, directed by Fernando Meirelles who also directed City of God. It stars Julianne Moore and Gael Garcia Bernal caught up in a global blindness epidemic.
More big names in the feature film competition include Angelina Jolie in Clint Eastwood's Changeling, Benicio del Toro in Steven Soderbergh's Che, Gwyneth Paltrow and Joaquin Phoenix in James Gray's Two Lovers and Philip Seymour Hoffman in Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche, New York.
Matteo Garrone, Paolo Sorrentino and Ari Folman are some of the less mainstream directors competing for the big awards.
There are also competition prizes for new talent (Un Certain Regard), film school entries (Cinefondation) and short films. In addition, the festival features special screenings and out of competition showings.
This year the return of the well-preserved Harrison Ford as archaeologist-adventurer Indiana Jones is grabbing the headlines in the latter category. The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is directed, as ever, by Steven Spielberg. Jack Black, Woody Allen and Robert de Niro are all involved in Out of Competition films too.
Madonna, Diego Maradona and Mike Tyson are just a few of the celebrities expected to strut their stuff on the Croisette, Cannes' main thoroughfare, during the next two weeks.
Britain is represented at the festival by first-time director Steve McQueen who opens the Un Certain Regard competition with his portrayal of the last six weeks in the life of Bobby Sands. The IRA hunger striker died in 1981 after 66 days without food. The short film category features a film made by English artist Sam Taylor-Wood and executive-produced by the late Anthony Minghella.
The juries for each competition category include international film actors, directors, writers, technicians, critics and journalists depending on the award. This year's feature film jury is led by American actor-director Sean Penn and includes US actress Natalie Portman and Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron.
Last year Cristian Mungiu won the feature film Palme d'Or with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.

Prof Rosa and Jill, along with the rest of the team, drill Ben on the finer points of card counting to beat the house in Blackjack. They show him how the team works to win at the tables. When to split your hand, when to leave, when the deck is hot and so on. They also play around with a few disguises and personalities, to keep the casino guessing and to keep winning. I enjoyed watching the team work, with signals, code, shuffles and all. In real life, this would take many weeks, and then the casinos carefully watch for it at their own pits on camera.
If a casino catches them card counting, the penalty could be severe. You can probably find easier ways to get money for college than staring at the fist of a security manager named Cole, played by Laurence Fishburn. Cole doesn't tolerate counting at his tables, while at the same time losing customers to new security measures at casinos across town. Ben finds out the hard way that casinos like to keep their money.
The plot moves around, Boston to Las Vegas, in school to the Blackjack pits. You'll find a few twists, and you'll see the team live it up in Vegas. Ben and Jill have a few moments together, for a little love story.
Ben also alienates a couple of his brainy friends during the movie, and ruins some of their plans for another project. He has to deal with the ethics - the lies - about having lots of money around, flying to Las Vegas for the weekend constantly, and keeping secrets about his other group of friends.
As he gambles on the team and blackjack to pay for med school, he finds his life in a spiral. His life starts to fall apart, and the fun gives way to pressure. He has to stop it before he loses control completely, and can't reclaim his future or the present.
The movie has a fun, Hollywood finish. The specifics I'll leave for you to see in the movie itself. 21 entertained, and I enjoyed it. It has a few typical Las Vegas show scenes inappropriate for younger viewers.
Remember, this is a movie. You'll find a few good twists and some nonlinear story telling. I don't recommend earning money for college like this, but the scholarship essay adds to the ending. Go see it.

There are no sure things in Hollywood, but one genre of horror movie that seems to always just draw people to it is the zombie movie. I think part of what makes zombie movies terrifying, even the older ones with slow zombies, is the taboo. They're not human, but they're close enough to bring up the cannibalism taboo.
There's something great about zombie movies, which with George Romero's influence have also become renowned for having hidden political and social commentary. This combination makes these horror movies particularly interesting, even above many of their peers. Zombie movies also tend to have a cult following, keeping them popular even years and years after release to DVD.
There are several main factors that make up a great zombie movie.
#1: Interesting Zombies. The best zombie movies have a wide variety of zombies who could be odd looking, funny looking, or terrifying, but the best zombie movies have something that sets their zombies apart from the rest.
#2: Gore. Zombie fans can tell you one of the major things everyone waits for is the first extremely gory death scene. It's just not a zombie movie without one violent death scene.
#3: Non Cliched Characters. Don't get me wrong, there are always basic cliche characters, but the best zombie movies have one or two characters who really stick out as being unique and different. #5: One Human Psychopath/Idiot. Usually there is one person who is either a psychopath and thus is as much of a danger as the zombies, or there's one idiot who does something stupid which lets the zombies in.
These are just a few of the things that make a great zombie movie. Not all of these always have to be present, but they definitely help. The new remakes of the old Romero classics are continuing the new trend of running zombies, which is definitely different from all the old school interpretations which had zombies strong, but slow.
This is a good base for starting a zombie movie. The one other interesting trend is the explosion of shorter fan films which are usually pretty funny zombie movie parodies, but that's for another article.

Based on real historical events, Pocahontas depicts a slightly different version of John Smith's expedition to Virginia.
In 1607, a ship carrying British settlers sails for North America in search of gold. The handsome Captain John Smith leads the band of rag-tag English Sailors while Governor Ratcliffe lazily lounges around giving orders.
Meanwhile, in the Powhatan tribe, Pocahontas, the beautiful daughter of Chief Powhatan learns that she is to marry the tribes greatest warrier Kocoum. Pocahontas thinks Kocoum is too serious for her wild natrue and travels to an enchanted glade to ask for advice from the talking tree Grandmother Willow. Pocahontas has had a dream of a spinning arrow that is telling her that change is coming. Grandmother Willow tells Pocahontas to listen with her heart.
When the settlers arrive in Virginia the Powhatans cautiously observe them, hoping they mean no harm and will leave soon. But alas, one of the Powhatan warriors is spotted and a battle ensues. Chief Powhatan declares that the 'pale face' white men are dangerous and no one is to go near them.
While the two groups are busy shooting at each other, Pocahontas and John Smith meet and patiently learn about each other. When John explains that the settlers want to develop houses and teach 'savages' about civilization, Pocahontas sings "Colours of the Wind" to explain the value of the natural world as it is. While the Powhatans are simple, they have valuable wisdom that cannot be taugh by the settlers.
A few days later, John decides to revisit Pocahontas. Pocahontas and John sneak off to the enchanted glade where John meets Grandmother Willow. Governor Radcliffe is convinced the 'savages' are hiding his gold so John decides to ask Pocahontas. The Powhatan's extreme purity and appreciation for the land is evident when John tries to explain what he is talking about by saying it is yellow and very valuable and Pocahontas pulls out a cob of corn. John Smith learns that here is no gold.
On both sides, the settlers and the warriors have decided to fight. A neighbouring tribe has arrived to help the Powhatans destroy the white men and the settlers decide to ambush the Powhatans.
John Smith returns to the settlement and tries to explain that there is no gold but Ratcliffe believes this is a lie. Pocahontas and Smith meet and talk about trying to convince both sides that there is no gold and there is no danger. Unfortunately, events do not always work the way they should. Smith gets mistakenly arrested and sentenced to death. As full out war is nearly waged, and Smith is about to be ended, Pocahontas stops everyone else in their tracks and says, "Look where the path of hatred has brought us!".
While I probably will not go live out in the wild now, this really makes you think about the things wee deem as imortant. We need to see the world in all its beauty, for the highest trees and the greatest star constelations. We needs to see other people and things from different points of view, because what for some might be a dangerous bear, is really just a mama looking after her babies. We need to keep dreaming and aiming for those things our hearts desire, because the things we seek might be 'just around the riverbend'. Appreciate the things around you and keep dreaming.

The movie "30 Days of Night" showed vampires in a very unusual light, one that is certainly uncommon at least among movies of vampires, which are often celebrated for being sensual, as well as terrifying. Vampires in a pack formation is very unusual for a vampire movie, especially modern ones. As far as having an actual "pack" of vampires, there are only two other recent movies that give a good comparison to "30 Days," which are "John Carpenter's Vampires" and "From Dusk Till Dawn."
The dignity and class really set these citizens of the night apart from most monster counterparts, but that dignity doesn't exist in "30 Days," as the vampires are almost like the way a traditional pack of werewolves work, and far less human than most other interpretations.
This allows an interesting comparison between the three movies. The pack of vampires in "30 Days" is definitely an aggressive and vicious predatory pack, while "Vampires" has a more traditional "pack" of vampires. There is a definite leader, and vampires falling in behind as a group, but each individual has human level intelligence. In the movie "From Dusk Till Dawn," they look like they are half way between "Vampires" and between "30 Days," but even in "From Dusk Till Dawn" they don't seem to be much of an organized group so much as individuals all doing their own thing.
So which group of vampires is scarier? That's hard to say and maybe depends on what scares you the most. Are you more afraid of the conscious group of these monsters who at least appear human in basic actions and thought and thus can reason and outwit you? Or does the sheer savagery of the "30 Days of Night" pack hit you as a far worse and scarier?
In John Carpenter's "Vampires," the vampire is Valek (Thomas Ian Griffith), who is the intelligent and resourceful leader of a brood of vampires who used one colony as a distraction to lure the vampire hunters out, then came out at night and took out the entire group. These vampires are smart and appear like more traditional vampires: human like and intelligent with superhuman strength.
In the movie "30 Days of Night," the vampires are led by Marlow (Danny Huston), the lead vampire of the pack who speaks an ancient language. The rest are like a pack of wild animals, but animals with a very high intelligence, as they even use survivors for bait. This adds a definite shock value, but there seems to be evidence that a smart person who survives the initial onslaught could hide. These vampires seem more vicious, but less supernatural.
In the movie "From Dusk Till Dawn," there is somewhat of a pack mentality, and a "queen vampire," but even then they don't seem like an organized pack, but just a large group of individuals who are all going ballistic in the same small area. The being trapped is what makes the terror in this movie work best, but these seem to be the least frightening vampires of all three groups.
So which pack of vampires is more frightening? Is it the one that seems to have conscious thought and intelligence among every single one of its members, or is it the one that acts like a pack of the most savage predators in world history? Or is it half way, with a brutal chaotic group inside a closed space?
It's an interesting debate, and one that I think will help reinvigorate interest in a group of monsters who were in anger of becoming stale.
